One of the tragic issues in Christianity is that we have an enemy that knows our book better than we do. Too few Christians have an accurate knowledge of the scripture therefore Satan has the ability to deceive us using our own Holy Bible.

Obviously, the scripture lets us know that God is not a man that he should lie; so I’m not suggesting that the Bible is in error, but what I am saying is that if you are not careful Satan can pervert the truth so you believe a lie.

So what is the biggest lie the Bible ever told. I know it’s going to be a shocker for you but this is it “The truth will set you free”. I hate to burst your bubble but that is a big fat lie.

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32 KJV) Yes it is very true the Bible plainly states that the truth will set you free (NIV). However, we fail to understand the importance of context when we read scripture. Do we remember our rules of grammar that say you can’t start a sentence with the word and. This word is a conjunctive word meaning it combines two thoughts together. Whenever we see a verse that starts with and, it is imperative that we read the verse prior to find out the contextual thought that is being conveyed.

Let’s read verses 31 & 32 together. “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Context changes everything.

You see, it’s the truth that you continue in that makes you free. In John 17:17 Jesus states “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” So to Jesus God’s word is truth. Therefore, when he told them to continue in His word; He was telling them to continue in truth. Then the knowledge of the truth they continued in would set them free.

For example, a man who is 500 lbs knows he needs to lose weight. However, the knowledge of that truth is not enough to set him free. He has to continue in the knowledge of that truth until it forces him to take action. Then and only then can he be free.

Many Christians come to church and hear the truth, but unless they continue in that truth they will never be free. Satan doesn’t mind you hearing truth, he only cares when you continue in truth and make application to your life. When you do that, you are on the pathway to freedom.

Don’t let satan deceive you any longer(Jn 8:44). Be consistent and lay hold of the truth without wavering. Continue in the word until the truth of the word makes you free in every area of your life. That is what Satan is afraid of. His big lie is exposed. Only the truth I continue in can free me. Don’t wait, make a point to start walking in God’s truth today.
