My 3 yr old and 2 yr old sons are currently in the room adjacent to me. They are together and as I type they are supposed to be going to sleep. They keep finding ways to wake themselves up. Full of energy, and they have not had a nap all day.  As the father figure, I’m going to have to step in and shut the whole operation down. Tomorrow is Saturday. It’s our family day. They will miss out on many joys if they sleep the day away tomorrow.  They are too immature to know the importance of resting now because another day is coming that they need to be prepared for.

How many of us are just like my boys. We go go go go go, but when it’s time for rest we find an excuse or reason to go go go again. This is unwise. All throughout scripture God championed the idea of resting from our labour. He rested himself in the creation account, and much is said about the sabbath throughout the Bible. In our break-neck pace of today’s world, filled with technology that should save us time but doesn’t, we are forgetting the spiritual prerequisite to REST. We can not remain immature like my boys. We have to realize that resting is a command not an option.

You should not ignore the manual on your car and expect it to run at its highest level. Likewise we can not ignore scriptural laws; especially, the ones that recur over and over. Even though you may be working for God, He still needs you to rest so you are prepared to fill all of His purposes for your life. We can not get around this. We will never save the world, until we learn how to effectively preserve our own.

I speak of both physical and spiritual resting. This includes resting from worry, anxiety, and fleshly works among other things; and relying solely in Christ’ finished work at Calvary. To put it in laymen terms: Everybody, It’s time to Get Some Rest.

Now I’m off to the room next to me to lay down the law. Don’t force God to have to do you the same way. Take the initiative and rest now so He can use you more effectively later. God bless you and once again, please Get Some Rest.

Exodus 33:14And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.”

Mark 6:31And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest a while.” For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.

Philippians 4:6-7Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 4:9-11There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall through following the same example of disobedience.
